Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session introduces healthcare providers to the Labour Care Guide (LCG)—the World Health Organization–recommended tool that replaces the traditional partograph to support evidence-based, woman-centred, and respectful intrapartum care. The session will focus on the rationale for the LCG, its structure and components, and practical application in monitoring labour progress, maternal wellbeing, fetal wellbeing, and care processes. Participants will learn how to use the LCG to support timely clinical decision-making, reduce unnecessary interventions, and improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Case-based demonstrations and hands-on practice will be used to strengthen competency in real-time labour monitoring.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: 1. Understanding the Labour Care Guide Explain the rationale for the Labour Care Guide and how it differs from the traditional partograph. Describe the core principles of the LCG, including individualized assessment, evidence-based thresholds, and respectful maternity care. 2. Structure and Components of the LCG Identify and correctly complete the key sections of the LCG, including maternal condition, fetal wellbeing, labour progress, and supportive care practices. Interpret clinical parameters documented in the LCG to guide ongoing intrapartum management. 3. Clinical Decision-Making in Labour Use the LCG to recognize normal labour patterns and identify deviations requiring intervention. Apply appropriate, timely, and proportionate clinical actions based on LCG findings. 4. Promoting Respectful and Woman-Centred Care Integrate respectful maternity care practices such as effective communication, pain relief options, emotional support, and informed decision-making into labour management. Support shared decision-making using information documented in the LCG. 5. Implementation and Quality Improvement Identify common challenges and solutions in implementing the LCG in labour wards. Utilize LCG data for clinical audits, quality improvement, and strengthening maternity care services.
