Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session aims to enhance healthcare workers’ awareness and preparedness for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), a severe viral haemorrhagic disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The presentation will cover the epidemiology, modes of transmission, clinical manifestations, and public health implications of Ebola virus disease. Participants will review strategies for early recognition, screening, triage, and prompt reporting of suspected cases, alongside appropriate infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe patient handling, and environmental decontamination. The session will also address specimen collection and referral, safe handling of infectious materials, patient isolation, contact tracing, and coordination with public health authorities. Emphasis will be placed on strengthening institutional preparedness, protecting healthcare workers, and preventing healthcare-associated transmission.

Objectives

Learning Objectives By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Describe Ebola Virus Disease and explain its epidemiology, transmission routes, and public health significance. Recognize the clinical features of suspected EVD, including relevant exposure history and early warning signs. Apply appropriate screening, triage, isolation, and notification procedures for suspected cases. Demonstrate understanding of infection prevention and control measures, including appropriate PPE use and safe donning and doffing practices. Outline safe specimen collection, packaging, transport, and referral procedures in accordance with established biosafety protocols. Describe the principles of supportive patient care and the importance of timely referral to designated treatment facilities. Explain the role of contact identification, tracing, monitoring, and risk communication in containing outbreaks. Identify institutional preparedness and response measures, including staff training, emergency protocols, and coordination with public health authorities. Promote occupational safety and responsible risk communication to minimize healthcare-associated transmission, stigma, and misinformation.
