Description
This training focuses on the recognition, assessment, prevention, and management of neonatal jaundice in newborns. It covers the causes and risk factors of jaundice, early identification of danger signs, assessment of bilirubin levels, differentiation between physiological and pathological jaundice, and appropriate interventions, including phototherapy and exchange transfusion when indicated. The training also emphasises timely referral, prevention of complications such as acute bilirubin encephalopathy and kernicterus, and parental education in accordance with current neonatal care guidelines.
Objectives
By the end of the training, participants should be able to:
Define neonatal jaundice and explain its common causes, risk factors, and pathophysiology.
Identify newborns at risk of developing severe hyperbilirubinaemia and recognise danger signs requiring urgent intervention.
Assess neonatal jaundice and interpret bilirubin levels using appropriate age-specific clinical guidelines.
Differentiate between physiological and pathological jaundice and identify indications for further investigation.
Initiate and monitor appropriate management, including phototherapy and exchange transfusion when indicated.
Recognise and manage complications of severe neonatal jaundice, including acute bilirubin encephalopathy and kernicterus.
Educate parents and caregivers on early recognition of jaundice, effective breastfeeding, and the importance of timely medical review.
