Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session provides a structured, stepwise approach to the evaluation and management of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) and Overactive Bladder (OAB)—common conditions that significantly affect quality of life across adult populations. The session will review pathophysiology, symptom classification, differential diagnosis, and evidence-based management strategies, emphasizing a progressive care model from conservative measures to pharmacologic and advanced interventions. Participants will explore patient-centered assessment tools, lifestyle and behavioral therapies, rational pharmacotherapy, and indications for referral and procedural options. Practical case discussions will highlight individualized treatment planning, monitoring of outcomes, and management of adverse effects, with a focus on improving long-term adherence and patient satisfaction.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: 1. Understanding LUTS and OAB Define and classify LUTS and OAB, including storage, voiding, and post-micturition symptoms. Describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and impact on quality of life in men and women. 2. Comprehensive Clinical Evaluation Conduct a structured assessment including history, physical examination, bladder diaries, and validated symptom scores. Identify red flags and differentiate LUTS/OAB from other urological, neurological, and metabolic conditions. 3. Progressive Management Approach Implement first-line conservative strategies such as lifestyle modification, bladder training, pelvic floor muscle therapy, and patient education. Select appropriate pharmacologic therapies based on symptom profile, comorbidities, and patient preferences. Monitor treatment response and manage common adverse effects effectively. 4. Advanced and Referral-Based Interventions Identify indications for escalation to combination therapy, minimally invasive procedures, or specialist referral. Discuss advanced treatment options for refractory symptoms and appropriate patient selection. 5. Patient-Centered and Long-Term Care Apply shared decision-making principles to align treatment goals with patient expectations. Develop follow-up and monitoring plans to optimize adherence, outcomes, and quality of life.
