Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session focuses on cervical cancer, a largely preventable malignancy that remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among women, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. The session will address the natural history of cervical cancer, risk factors, screening and diagnostic approaches, staging, treatment options, and survivorship care. Participants will review current evidence-based strategies for primary prevention (HPV vaccination), secondary prevention (screening and early treatment), and tertiary care (surgical, chemoradiation, and palliative management). Emphasis will be placed on integrating cervical cancer services into routine reproductive health care and strengthening multidisciplinary and health-system approaches to reduce disease burden.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: 1. Epidemiology and Pathogenesis Describe the epidemiology and public health impact of cervical cancer at local and global levels. Explain the role of persistent high-risk HPV infection in the development of cervical cancer and its precancerous lesions. 2. Prevention Strategies Discuss primary prevention strategies including HPV vaccination and health education. Apply evidence-based screening methods such as VIA, Pap smear, and HPV DNA testing according to national and international guidelines. 3. Diagnosis and Staging Recognize clinical presentations of cervical cancer and pre-invasive disease. Outline the diagnostic work-up and staging of cervical cancer using standardized staging systems. 4. Management Approaches Describe treatment options for cervical cancer based on disease stage, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and combined modalities. Identify indications for referral and multidisciplinary management. 5. Follow-Up, Survivorship, and Palliative Care Implement appropriate follow-up and surveillance strategies after treatment. Address survivorship issues including fertility, sexual health, psychosocial support, and quality of life. Recognize indications for palliative care and symptom control in advanced disease. 6. Health Systems and Multidisciplinary Care Integrate cervical cancer prevention and treatment services into maternal and reproductive health programs. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including gynecologists, oncologists, nurses, pathologists, radiotherapists, and community health workers to improve outcomes.
