Description

This training focuses on the recognition, diagnosis, prevention, and management of acute kidney injury (AKI), a sudden decline in kidney function. It covers the identification of risk factors, assessment of clinical signs and symptoms, interpretation of laboratory investigations, fluid and electrolyte management, appropriate use of medications, prevention of complications, and timely referral of patients requiring specialised renal care. The training aims to improve healthcare providers’ competence in the early detection and effective management of AKI in accordance with current clinical guidelines.

Objectives

By the end of the training, participants should be able to: Define acute kidney injury and describe its causes, risk factors, and pathophysiology. Identify patients at risk of developing AKI and recognise its early clinical signs and symptoms. Apply appropriate diagnostic criteria and investigations to identify and classify AKI. Develop appropriate management plans, including fluid assessment, electrolyte correction, and monitoring of renal function. Identify and manage complications of AKI, including hyperkalaemia, metabolic acidosis, and fluid overload. Implement preventive measures, including appropriate hydration, medication review, and avoidance of nephrotoxic agents. Recognise indications for urgent referral and renal replacement therapy, including dialysis. Educate patients and caregivers on kidney health, follow-up care, and measures to prevent recurrent kidney injury.
